    South Carolina State’s Dexter Ratliff earned a first-place finish in the hammer with a school-record throw of 54.35 meters at the Embry-Riddle Classic in Daytona. 

    It had been over two decades since Orangeburg Prep’s boys track team won a state title, but that drought was broken Friday as the Indians finished four points (86-82) ahead of John Paul II Catholic School to claim the SCISA Division II title.

    Jim Larrañaga, Lon Kruger, Fran Dunphy and Dianne Nolan are this year's recipients of the Joe Lapchick Character Award. This is the 16th year the award will be presented to those who have shown the character traits of Lapchick, who coached at St. John's and with the New York Knicks. The quartet will be honored at a luncheon on Sept. 24 in New York. Larrañaga has spent the last 53 years coaching in college since he got his start as an assistant at Davidson College in 1971.

    South Carolina State, coming off an impressive outdoor track season, will be among eight Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference schools battling for the league’s Outdoor Track and Field Championship May 6-8 at Dick Price Stadium in Norfolk, Virginia.

    Two WNBA players were among a dozen Americans who opted to play in Russia this past offseason following Brittney Griner's incarceration in 2022. Kayla Thornton of the New York Liberty and Monique Billings of the Los Angeles Sparks played for Dynamo Kursk.
